The Need and Impact of URDC’s Home Repair Program

Low-income and elderly homeowners often defer exterior home repairs because of expense and past experiences with unscrupulous contractors (over 40% of URDC’s families have been scammed!). URDC’s Home Repair Program helps these homeowners pay for repairs using trustworthy, reliable contractors. Assisting these homeowners improves the safety and healthiness of their homes and prevents further deterioration of the surrounding neighborhood. It allows seniors to “age in place” in a safe and dignified manner and mitigate displacement from gentrification.

How URDC’s Owner Occupied Home Repair Program Works

URDC works with its congregations and neighborhood organizations to identify homeowners who need help with home repairs. URDC contacts the homeowner to assess the work that needs to be done and identifies a contractor to provide an estimate of the work.

URDC then uses a combination of resources to develop a unique package of financial assistance customized to the homeowner, including:

Low Interest Loans

URDC facilities the application of low interest loans through City programs for large home repairs

URDC Grants

Homeowners may be eligible for grants from URDC for some home repair expenses. The homeowner must contribute some amount to fund the repair in order to qualify for these grants.

Volunteer Days

URDC coordinates volunteer work crews to address basic home repairs for certain homeowners.
